Suzzallo Library

The reading room at the University of Washington.

The reading room at the University of Washington.

I figured that the best time to take a photo of the library reading room would be before the quarter started when it only contained a few grad students or those taking summer classes.

I wanted to do an HDR shot (which I did) but I did not have a tripod but I had a lot of desks. I balanced a book that was left laying around on top of the lights for a little more stability and to reduce the sound of the shutter (it is a library). The shots were not perfectly lined up however when reduced to an 800 pixel width it is hard to tell.

I want to do a better HDR in the future when it is either night outside or direct sunlight is coming through the stained glass. This was done with an overcast sky which was not impressive. Though it did let me get the full range of light with only three exposures.

Sea of Bikes

Bicycles, bicycles, everywhere. Not a drop to drink.

Bicycles, bicycles, everywhere. Not a drop to drink.

I realize looking back over the week that I have not had any substantive posts aside from the first one which was a procrastination method. Even though I have had a lot of free time I suppose that it is due to a lack of bandwidth from studying and taking finals. Especially from taking finals.

I did take a small break, sort of a break, during the week where I went out with my camera for the first time in a few weeks. The library was a prime target for photographs since about two thirds of the schools population is currently living there in a hopes to catch up on ten weeks of skipped lectures. While I did not venture into any of the higher levels the swarm of bike laying siege to the main entrance was evidence enough for finals week.

Photographing this invariable swarm of pedal powered vehicles a walking cell phone conversation summed up the scene nicely:

“I am totally lost in a sea of bikes right now”.

It was so dense you could have floated a kayak.

Literary Photography

So many books to read. So I took a picture.

So many books to read. So I took a picture.

The other day I decided to try to take some photos in the UCSB library between classes. I had several shots in mind, namely I wanted a wide angle photo taken between library stacks with the ocean visible out of the window.

I underestimated several things.

First I forgot how full the top floor of the library is, even in the middle of the day. Not only was it full it was completely silent. This silent only highlighted two things: my shoes were awfully squeaky, second a camera shutter is surprisingly loud.

Taking photos on that floor was awkward. And not the good awkward where I am wedging myself against pillars to get the right angle, but an intrusive sort of awkward from invading a quiet study space. I only was able to take a few photos this time around.

I will need to find a good time to go back when the sky is clear and the areas are empty. I doubt that will happen.
